WELCOME TO THE NORTHEAST DIVISION OF BOWLS USAStretched from New England to Southern Virginia and out to Western Pennsylvania the Northeast Division is the birthplace of lawn bowls in the United States of America.
In the early 1900's the American Lawn Bowls Association was formed in Buffalo, NY and continues today as BOWLS USA with clubs spanning from coast to coast. Our division is a very active one with tournaments nearly every other week during the summer as well as an annual week-long open tournament with potential visitors from all over the globe. The Northeast Division supports a strong local club base and encourages clubs to join and spread their wings to other clubs and more competition. We support clubs who foster strong camaraderie, league play and social events throughout the year and who seek to promote and grow the sport for future generations to enjoy. The Northeast division has a long tradition of excellence with several national champions and even a world champion in its past and current membership. All the clubs welcome guests who want to try out this sport and joining is easy. Contact us today and we'll get you started in a game that you can play and enjoy for a lifetime. It is a great family game with husbands and wives playing at the same time with their children. It is not unheard of to have three generations all playing on the same green. We all have witnessed 12 year olds competing against 80 year olds, grandfathers against grand-daughter and brothers teaming up for 2 and 3 decades. It is truly a sport one can play and compete at a high level for many many years. The most common phrase we hear from new members who came to the game in retirement is, "I wish I knew about this game before!" Come give it a try! 2018 President's Message![]() Following the NED Open the NED Delegates have elected me to my 4th term as President. My first term was for the ALBA Eastern Division back in 1997. At that time we began discussions to merging the men and women together and held our first joint open in 1999. During the open we had 2 full greens at Buck Hill with 14 pair’s teams for the women and 16 men’s triples teams. Our BBQ on the Monday night had 77 people attend. While participation was down a little over last year we only had participation from 42 division bowlers. (14 women) We have also lost the use of several greens including Slater Park, Cunningham and Williamsburg.
In short, we have declined significantly in the last 20 years. However, under the leadership of our past president Veronica Sum, with support from our board and Bowls USA, we are making strides to halt that trend. Improvements in our marketing, coaching and grant programs are a great beginning. We have been assisting New Bedford, who is working towards bringing bowling back into the Boston area and hopefully we will be bowling there in a couple of years. There is still much to do and we need your help. I invite all of you to consider getting involved. Running the NED is not a job just for tournament bowlers. There have been several programs introduced by Bowls USA and NED to support our clubs and in the NED we would like to do more. We would benefit from having board members who are social bowlers that care about the game. We need to know more about what a social bowler needs and why some clubs do not feel a need to be part of the NED. If you are interested in becoming a board member please let me know. Colin Smith President NED 2018 NED Bowler of the Year (BOY)![]() How Bowler of the Year is Determined....
At each event on the NED calendar, points are awarded for finishing in the first 4 positions (if determined). 10 points for 1st, 8 points 2nd, 5 points for 3rd and 3 points for 4th. Points are accumulated throughout the year and an award is made to the top player based upon points at the end of the year or at the first event the following year. An award is also given to the best Player in each Decade. Starting in 2018 we will no longer award BOY points for the Play-downs and the top 10 players at end of the NED Open will automatically qualify for selection into the East Coast Challenge team should that player apply. Also receiving selection will be the Play-down winners. East Coast Challenge is an annual Team event against the Southeast Division. Each division selects 15 players to play in 3 groups of 5 over 2 days in Singles, Pairs, Triples and Fours. Download file for history of BOY and past BOY winners

Institution of new fliers and business cards for use at some clubs in 2014...
We developed a new promotional flier and business card that will hopefully help spread a positive awareness of our sport around the communities that have bowling greens. This is our first new step towards working with clubs to build membership.
The fliers are tri-fold and are meant to be used in combination with the business card with each club's contact. Currently, Frick Park, Essex and Fernliegh LBCs have been issued cards and we will work to get more clubs involved.
You can click on each individual image on the bottom to enlarge.
