SALADIN PAIRS - AUG 6 & 7, 2022 - fRICK PARK LAWN BOWLING CLUB
The 6th running of the Lois Saladin Pairs at Frick Park was extremely successful despite the bleak forecast for the weekend. Quite literally, almost every hour on the forecast had some percentage of rain. But like a good bowl cutting through a crowded head, the event dodged most of the storms. There was only 20 minutes worth of rain delays & 15 minutes of actually playing in the rain, but when it wasn't raining, it was around 90 degrees with very high humidity. This event, named after the great bowler Lois Saladin, lived up to her name with some great clutch play by all the teams. The entries were Pittsburgh heavy with 20/24 entrants being from the home club. The only out of towners was the team of Joe Kelly/Ryan Hastu, Patrick Duffy (playing with Frick member Sabrina LeClair), & Veronica Sum (playing with her Championships partner Eileen Luba).
It was a customary NED event with a five-card draw. Plus points were originally implemented with threat of a weather shortened event, but with the last two games being played with minimal threat of rain, plus points were waived. The greens looked amazing & had personality. It added an extra level in skill & discipline.
At the conclusion of Day 1, there were two teams (Duffy & Zankowski) with a 2-0-1 record & SIX teams right behind with a 2-1 record. An impressive 8/12 were still in the hunt for the title.
At the conclusion of Day 2, Duffy & Zankowski maintained their "unblemished" record with a 4-0-1 record. The six teams with a 2-1 record were whittled down to just one team of 4-1. The team of Mycoff & Lockyear finished the event off strong after losing their first game. They claimed a very strong 3rd place finish.
LeClair/Duffy & Tragard/Zankowski played in the final. These two teams met in the third round on Day 1 where they finished in a heavily contested 12-12 tie. Team Duffy was down 10-5 at the 8th end and came back to claim a 12-10 lead coming home. Team Zankowski played a great last end to claim two. It was only fitting these two teams met again in the finals. The finals was agreed upon to be slightly truncated due to travel times. The game was 10 ends long.
Team Duffy, playing with a brand new rookie bowler Sabrina LeClair, jumped out to a 8-1 lead after five ends. Team Zankowski fought valiantly back with some great clutch shots by Maz Zankowski to cut it to 8-6. Team Duffy responded to close the game out 14-6, with the neophyte lead Leclair playing amazing, where Duffy just had to protect/add to her great shots.
4th place finishers (for BOY points) were teams: Kelly/Hastu; Stawarts/Entwistle; & Heilbronner/Meddis.
Thank you Frick Park for another enjoyable event & as well as having a very active club. There were 6 first time NED event players in this event from Pitt. Keep up the great work!
